Jess - Fathers Footsteps
I’ll never forget the first time my son, Jess, heard an elk bugle in the wilds of our Idaho mountains. His eyes filled tears as he whispered “dad, that was awesome.”
Within an hour of that first bugle, I was at full draw on a nice six-point bull at just eight yards, and Jess was whispering in my ear, “shoot dad, shoot!” I didn’t end up shooting that bull, but it was an awesome experience to share with my son. He still gives me grief for not shooting the bull that day.
Jess was only nine at the time, and for the next five years he never stopped talking about taking an elk of his own. We hunted together a lot over the next few years and he proved himself as a hunter, and bow hunter. Until the 2014 season, however, an elk hunt just never came to fruition.
Between school, sports, and my commitments, the stars never aligned for an archery elk hunt. I was determined to get an elk in front of Jess in 2014.
Fortunately, the stars did align, and in an amazing way. We’re excited to share the adventure, and hopeful a few more kids will be out in the field next season.
This film was featured in the 2015 Full Draw Film Tour.
