As the 2015 Archery elk season approched I was full of wonder a doubt. This was the case because I had just started college three hours away from home, so it would make it hard for me to come home and hunt. But every weekend I got the chance I headed home and gave it all I had. Throughout the season I had many opportunities at small rag horn bulls, but I kept hoping for a chance at a bigger bull. Little did I know he was going to be more than I could of ever asked for. As the season was coming to a close, I was talking to a friend Matt Myers and he told me I could join him for the last weekend. The morning of the last day I called in a one horn five point into fifty yards, but  unfortunately wasn't ever presented an eithical shot. That evening I headed to a spot where Matt and his son Caleb watched a bull bed down. I sat and called for several hours and got one response from him. The bull took his cows and headed straight away from me. I decided to try and cut him off and it surprisingly worked out. As I circled in front of him I was able to get within one hundred yards. He was rubbing his horns on the willows. The moment I heard him jump back into the river I knew it was my time to shine. I ran to the edge of the river to find him standing in the water 77 yards away. I settled my 80 yard pin right behind the shoulder and double lunged him. I watched him go down and I can honestly say ive never been so excited. My breath was completely taken away, I was in shock that I just shot a 6x4 freak. Caleb Myers came down off the hill from watching from above, and we crossed the river to go recover my bull. Caleb wanted to stay, but he had to head home. The next morning my good friend Jake Butler and Cory Lockhart came and helped me pack him out. I am beyond thankful to harvest such a great bull. Thanks to everyone who helped me this season.

Nice BullWhat a unique hunt, and an even more unique bull. Way to be ethical on the first bull, we need more hunters with that same mindset, the best kill is a clean kill. Written by Cody on Tue 1 Dec 2015 3:54:43 PM GMT
