Utah Bighorn Sheep Tag!! Congrats Dad

I have had some great tags during my hunting career, but NONE have I been more excited about than my Dad's once in a lifetime Utah Bighorn Sheep tag.  18 Years of applications stating unsuccessful and finally in 1013 he drew his dream tag.  Larry Cox will be hunting the Utah 9 Mile, Range Creek unit.  This will obviously be a first for us as an entire family.  In the last 2 years I have realized that hunting all different kinds of species keeps me more focused and dedicated to learning these new animals habits and patterns.  Change is good and variety keeps hunting interesting.  I love hunting mule deer every year but I can't imagine just hunting deer year after year.  The 2013 i-Video Wildlife DVD is going to have it all, everything from Predators, Lions, Bear, Mule Deer, Elk, Fishing, and now Bighorn sheep!

Congrats Dad!   Stay Tuned......

Utah Big Game Draw Results

The plastic is being hit by the Utah DWR, Hope your one of the lucky ones hunting your trophy of a lifetime in Utah during 2013!!

Casey Johnson Write's....
I have hunted with High Top Outfitters once before so I had no question who I was going to book with in 2012. I was extremely impressed with HTO on my previous hunt and they exceeded my expectations for this hunt as well.
After receiving my bull elk tag for the Fishlake early rifle season, Outfitters Shane Scott and Jay Simon assigned my guides Taylor Albrect and Kasey Edgehouse immediately. My guides contacted me promptly keeping me updated. They would send me pictures of bulls they spotted during preseason scouting. They were also very informative on what to bring for the hunt as well as what to expect.
Once I arrived for my hunt we studied video that my guides had taken of several shooter bulls with distinctly different characteristics. I finally was able to select the bull I wanted to chase after much discussion with my guides.
The first few days of the hunt we saw many respectable bulls but I was still holding out for a monster. The 5th day into the hunt while glassing we caught a quick glimpse of a giant bull running his cows across a clearing. It happened so fast and we were so far away there was nothing we could do. A couple days later while set up in that same location we spotted the same bull measuring 411 6/8 inch pushing his harem of cows across the clearing. We made our move and got into shooting position. Using a Christensen Arms 300 Remington Ultra Magnum set up for long range shooting I dropped the bull at 840 yards!!! I was ecstatic and speechless and my guides shared the excitement!
Taylor and Kasey put me in a perfect position to succeed. They knew the area very well and where to find the bulls. Thanks to their knowledge they helped me decide to pass on smaller bulls we spotted earlier in the week. They put in 110% with preseason scouting, meals, camp accommodations, pictures of the harvest, meat preparation, caping, and finding a good taxidermist. I could not of asked for more. They are both great guides and friends. It was truly an experience I will never forget!
Thank you Taylor, Kasey, and High Top Outfitters for the hunt of a lifetime!!!!!

Utah Desert Big Horn Sheep By Todd Hermansen

Todd Hermansen Write's...
"A Desert Dream"

For years, my hunting dream was to go to Africa. That all changed when my wife informed me of a $508 charge posted to our bank account. While she was irritated, I was elated. That charge meant only one thing: I had drawn a desert bighorn sheep tag! Immediately I started scouring my Hunting Fool issues to learn everything I could about this once-in-a-lifetime hunt. In every article, the hunter had a guide and took a scouting trip around late May/early June. This became our plan and we started calling guides. We were impressed with Adam Bronson of Carter’s Hunting Services and formulated a plan to meet on Memorial Day weekend.

We put in a lot of miles on the Kaparowitz, West unit Memorial Day weekend learning the area and scouting for sheep. All total we saw several sheep (at least 12 rams) and two rattlesnakes. Most important we got to know Adam and started forming a way to communicate since I am deaf. During the summer, Adam and I maintained contact either by speaking with my wife or via email.
Knowing this would be a physically demanding hunt, my wife and I concentrated on getting into better shape. I started running and in addition to her exercise, my wife changed our diet and lifestyle. By the time the hunt I arrived we both lost weight and felt great. I am sure I burned off extra calories in August by sheer excitement. I also spent time on the rile range, sighting in my shot up to 400 yards in both calm and windy conditions. I knew I was a sure shot at 250 to 300 yards regardless of the breeze. By September, the hunt was all I could think about. I was fully packed a week before the trip and could not believe it when we finally arrived in camp on September 18. At camp Adam introduced to us the scouts, Bryce and Gary, and we established a plan for opening day.
Opening day was awesome, the weather was great and it felt good to be on the 4-wheeler in familiar territory with my rifle! By noon, we found a ram that looked good in the scope. Sneaking up within a hundred or so yards, I decided to pass on the big six-year-old. We spent the rest of the day scouring the area for sheep. Words cannot begin to describe the importance of good optics and the ability to sit still for hours and just glass. In the evening, we had found what looked to be a good ram in the scope. He was with several ewes over a mile away and appeared to have a dark brown hide. We decided to return the next day and get a closer look at “Chocolate.”
With all eyes on “Chocolate” the next morning, we determined that he was a good ram. His curl was not as complete as I desired, but his mass was impressive, not to mention his unique color. However, he was in very difficult area and was not moving any closer. Being only the second day of the hunt, we decided to return to camp and check out another area before making a decision to go after this ram.
Early in the afternoon, we set out on foot in a new area. Within an hour, we were on sheep—a group of at least 15 ewes and two really good rams. The bigger of the two had a full curl and simply looked awesome, but the closest we could get was at least 500 yards with a terrible crosswind. With less and less daylight, we returned to the truck super enthused about this big ram. Back at camp, I had a decision to make. Both “Chocolate” and this big ram were good shooters, each in an area entirely opposite of the other. The stress to harvest a once-in-a-lifetime tag is one thing, but having to decide between two good rams is even more stressful.
Whatever sleep I did get that night was literally full of dreams of the big ram we saw in the late afternoon. The first thing I told Adam in the morning was “I dreamed of the big one, that’s the one we are going after.” We immediately set to work. Back in the area, we knew the herd would not be far from where we saw them the night before. Sure enough, they had only moved 300 yards to the north. We started our sneak through some of the rockiest, roughest, windiest terrain. It was a wild hike up and down ravines until we arrived within 129 yards of the herd. We could not see the ram, but we knew he was bedded with the rest so we waited over an hour for them to get up and mill around. However, this herd did not mill, it moved. I had brief shot of the big ram only seconds before he went down another ravine, but he was flanked in front by another good ram and with the wind, I did not take the shot. That was the first time this ram almost died.
With the herd working down rather than up the terrain, we scurried down into a large wash in order to get ahead of them. Close to the wash, the herd milled in some sagebrush for about 20 minutes. I had another shot but with ewes in the way, I passed. That was the second time this ram almost died. Adam and I stayed on the sheep, and to our surprise they entered into and traveled up the wash. We stayed on them, and again I had another shot, but with a third ram flanking behind my target and knowing my tag was not a two-for-one harvest, I passed again. This was the third time the ram almost died. I had always heard of cats having nine lives, but rams? If they did, we were in for a very adrenaline-rush-exhausting day.
We stayed on their trail as they moved up the wash and eventually to the other side. Now on the west, the herd gradually made their way onto the rocks. Adam and I remained in the wash concealed under a cottonwood tree. We were within range and protected from the wind. I used a limb from the tree as a rest and Adam set up his camera. We watched and waited as this big ram finally separated himself from the herd on the tail of a hot ewe. At 249 yards, I watched him perform his last lip curl through my scope, and at full curl I took the shot. No more chasing, no more “nine lives”, and no more dreaming. The big ram was down, and it was real.
With 15” bases and 32” curls, this 157 field score ram was dream come true. My thanks go to Adam Bronson and his scouts, Gary and Bryce, for all their hard work. I know my deafness introduced a new stress to Adam, who could not simply say “take the shot”. I appreciate his patience and his signed attempts to communicate with me. I am also grateful to my family, who has never known the word “disability”. And, in particular, I am grateful for my wife who has been my ears and by my side on every major hunting adventure. Together, we know that dreams do come true.

Monster Utah Musky by: Tyson Mackay

Tyson Mackay Writes...
They say that this beast is the fish of 10,000 casts. Which may be true. I however did it in about 150. On a morning where it was 28 degrees at the lake and 70 by noon. Love the Rocky Mountain springs. I was ecstatic to say the least to land I e of these beasts my first time out fishing for them. Let alone a good representation of the species. I've got to thank my friend colt and hank for the invite and help in landing and releasing this beast to fight another day

8 Year Wait for a 200/lb Tom!! By Nick Higgins

Nick Higgins Write's....

After 8 years of putting in I drew a limited entry lion tag , and having a awesome guide and brother we had a great time. We caught a few smaller cats that we turned down and it all payed off with this monster tom late in the season . With the help of some shed hunters finding a kill this lion had made we were able to run him on dry sand in 80 plus degrees he ran us and the dogs through some nasty cliffs and ended up in a tree on the end of a 200' cliff . when I shot him he fell out of the tree and off the cliff. We were lucky he wasn't too beat up from the fall . He went over seven and a half ft and 200 plus pounds and a skull measurement of 15 1/8" .

Thanks to my brother Jared Higgins for a great hunt!

Utah Bulls, Bucks, Sheep and Goats by Kellen Cook

Kellen Cook Writes...
Alright guys this is my first attempt at doing anything like this so please keep chuckles to a minimum. I took all these pics/videos using the Phone Skope adapter, Zen-Ray spotting scope and Samsung Galaxy Slll. Everything was done with just my phone even the editing. And the song, is a favorite of mine so I guess you're gonna have to deal with it.

Montana Wild Presents..Trial & Error Bear Hunting Montana

Trial & Error – A Bear Hunting Short Film

Bear hunting is a key tool in managing predators across the West and especially here in Montana.  No, we do not want to wipe out the entire population of black bears; actually I think they are an amazing animal and without actually hunting them I’d never have gained that appreciation.  By hunting them we simply are doing our part in keeping a balance, which is weighing heavily in the predators favor in certain areas which we hunt.  Black bears kill fawns and elk calves in high numbers in the spring and have only one known predator, humans.

Bear hunting is one of my favorite types of hunting that one can partake in here in Montana.  It gets you back into the mountains and forces you to get back into shape.  It’s not hard to see bears, but I can say that it’s much more difficult to close the gap, relocate the bear, and try to sneak within bow range.
black bear, montana wild, MT, hunting, spring, bowhunting, spot and stalk, Bear Anarchy, Vortex, Carbon Express, Nikon, GoPro
This past Spring we saw 26+ black bears.  I had set a goal of taking a black bear with my bow and was planning on sticking it out unless a true giant crossed our paths.  Travis and I had some amazing close encounters, and many great memories.  It is truly amazing to be out in the wild, getting close to a predator that has the power to take down a human being.  With spring like conditions and lightning storms, we were given the full Montana bear hunting experience.  Watch our latest short film Trial & Error as I get close to multiple black bears in my pursuit of an archery kill.

We are excited for the upcoming spring, and will be going out on numerous hunts with the camera in hand.  To follow along with us be sure to join us over on our Facebook @http://www.facebook.com/Montana.Wild.Productions.

The Outdoorsmans Tripod and Pan Head

I just received my new Outdoorsmans Tripod Legs and Pan Head in the mail today.
I have researched these tripod legs and pan head for about 2 years now before deciding that for 2013 this was a must have piece of equipment for my hunting gear.

First off, this equipment is not "Cheap" and that is why it has taken me a few years to get into it, but that being said, it is not "Cheaply Made" this seems to be a once in a lifetime purchase!  This stuff is made extremely well.

These Tripod Legs (Click for more info) are super light weight and the quality is like nothing I have ever seen.  The Pan Head (Click for more info) is silky smooth and the lock down features both vertically and horizontally are a must. You can easily switch from glassing with your bino's to bringing it in close with the spotting scope, simply lock down the vertical and horizontal levers and switch out the optics and you will be dead on that big trophy.

Super excited to be using this set up in 2013 for my filming and scouting needs!
I will be using my Outdoorsmans tripod legs and pan head in these three different applications....

1. Filming and pictures

2. Spotting Scope & Digi Scoping

3. Leica Geovid Binocular Attachment for steady glassing

What I like....
  • Light Weight
  • Compact
  • Packable
  • Adaptable (Camera's, Spotters & Bino's)
  • Precision Equipment
  • Silky Smooth
  • Lock down features both vertical and horizontal (Must have for switching between optics)

For these products and more great hunting gear visit Outdoorsmans click it!

Enjoy the short 30 second advertisement...
